This is the first I've written in my new diary + the first I've written in 1932. We've had very pretty weather nearly every day this year. I'm going back to the hospital (Enloe Room 7) this A.M. where my little granddaughter was born yesterday. She is a few weeks premature and was a breach birth, weighs 6 lbs. 6 oz. seems to be fine in every way tho. Clede seems to be doing fine so far. Dr. Ellis a maternity specialist attended her. Clede's water broke in the morning about 2 o'clock. Bede called me at 3 and we got ready +got her in to the hospital before day light. I imagine about 5:30. Bede stopped at mother's and got $10.00 then after he got Clede in the hospital he came back out here and got a $50.00 draft from Erricson got a check for it at Freda's came on back to the hospital and stayed there till his little daughter was born at 1:40 that after noon. We drove home last nite and are going back this A.M Clede had rather a long labor on account of the position of the baby, I suppose. Fred is working at the mine, started the 1st and has worked every day since. Bess had a baby boy born Dec. 9. Marie left last Sunday morn for L.A. I had finished a pr. of pajamas for her that I had started for myself. She said they fit fine. I surely want to get out in the witness work this year.
Jan. 16
Saturday morning and a windy stormy day. The ground is covered about 8 or 10 in. snow. It snowed first about 2 in. last Monday and by Tuesday morn we had 8 in. Gus S. + Vivian J. didn't go to work that A.M. but the next morn they did but yesterday morn no one went to work but Fred, Bede + Ted the snow was almost 10 in. or a ft. I guess. It snowed little fine snow yesterday all day and I have quite a washing to do for Clede + the baby. Clede could come home to day but I'm sure they couldn't get her here. Bede + Ted have started in to Chico whether they get there + back I'll see. I don't feel so very good, my hands + arms go to sleep so much. I sure hate this kind of weather. Spot stayes in the house quite a lot. Russ is up to mother's. I guess he won't get home this week , it wouldn't be good to leave mother alone. He didn't go to school all of last week. Fred has quite a lot of chores to do night feeding pig, (cooks the feed) + getting wood, water etc.
Jan 19
Tuesday and it has been rather a pretty day our deep snow is almost gone a rain last nite + yesterday after noon took lots of it off. Bede + I drove into Chico yesterday and brot Clede and the baby home. They seemed to stand the trip fine. Clede has been walking around quite a lot to day. She is quite thin. Her abdomen is a little prominent yet. The baby head is shaping nicely. Her navel protrudes quite a bit I've put a piece of leather in her band that is better than just the band I think. We came home yesterday in the rain I rode in the rumble seat but didn't get wet much was well covered with coats and blanket. The hospital bill was $61.50 I think. Bede doesn't think the mine looks any too good. Ted was not feeling well yesterday had cramps in the stomach and didn't go to work; went to Johnny Ruio(?) and stayed all nite didn't go to work this A.M. but did this after noon. I get lonely for my Russell.
Jan 22
Another very pretty day so far. I've just finished washing + dressing the baby she is growing and getting plump already. Her little head is about O.K. now. It seems to me she looks more like Clede but I can't tell. Rita Barton just stopped in on her way up to Wrights. She thot the baby seemed so brite and had such a lot of dark hair. She was 2 weeks old yesterday. We, Bede, Clede, Ted + I all went up to mother's last nite for dinner. It was the first time mother had seen little Vonna. When we started home Bede's car wouldn't start and we had to sit in Bob's car till they got it started; I didn't know what was the matter, weak battery, maybe, I guess. Fred and I will go into town to morrow, get groceries etc. The baby's or one of them is kind o'sore. I've been washing it with boric water seems better this A.M I do all the washing, baby's and ours etc.
Jan 28
Thursday and a cloudy morn; a light skift of snow covers the ground; snowed in the nite. My little granddaughter is 3 weeks old to day. She is growing is asleep now after her morning bath. Had her first bath in a bath tub day before yesterday morn. I think she is a little colicky some times as yesterday + day before especially she was quite fretful. She looks so straight at you when you talk to her. Her navel still pouches but is not sore. Clede has lots of milk. The boys are still at the mine, also Fred, of course. The spotted sow has one little pig came nite before last I guess. Fred thinks she had more and that the red sow ate them. Moak's old boar has been hanging around maybe he ate them or may be she only had one. We're getting 4 or 5 eggs a day now, Mother gets 12 or 13 I think. Russ was home Sunday, went to town with Ted and I and came home with Fred + me. We had a big load of feed + groceries had no trouble with the car. Fred rc'vd a particularly nasty letter from D. Crain; wants Fred's whole check not later than Feb. 15th. Fred owes him now about $200.00. Bede talks about building a cabin on Fred's place. Ted quit smoking 2 or 3 days ago.
Feb 8
Monday and a rainy day has rained for several days most of the time. This has surely been a stormy winter. Ted + I went in the Chev into Chico Saturday got groceries + feed (at Durham) Ted got a new suit, hat, neck tie, 2 pr. sox and a pr of suspenders + sock garters. We brot the basinet home too, no storage charges. Russ came home with us stopped at mother's a little while. Ted got a sack of barley at Freda's for Moak $1.25 and Bede drove over to Freda's and got it. We were to loaded up to bring it, Moak came by last nite and got it. The baby is so sweet notices quite a lot now and smiles when you talk to her. She is gaining. Clede is gaining now. Ted looks good weighs about 161 now. The baby weighed 9 1/8 lbs with just a band on, a day or two ago. Bede looks good too. Fred has quite a cough. I don't have much leisure time I do most of the baby washing + all the other, I bathe the baby, always. Ted quit smoking Jan 23.
Feb 20
saturday and a cloudy morning after several days of very nice weather. Ted and I are going into town to daywill drive the Buick down to mother's and then take the Chev from there. Bede + Clede have been staying at Mother's since Monday eve. he's finishing casing the windows and will soon put her front porch floor in, I guess. Tracy, Hazel, Andy and Edna will be here next Sat. if they come when they've planned to come. Russell has been home this week, gets his lessons, he was a little hoarse and there is whooping cough going around so I thot it wouldn't hurt to have him stay home a week or two. He weighs 75 lbs. and looks fine. Fred + Ted drove over to Wrights last eve + got the bed + springs. Clede sent for a dress from Fashion Frocks last Monday I think it was. Marie + Grit got home Mon. eve came with Joe. Perry came over yesterday and got the tires (3) that Fred gave him to cut mother 2 cords of wood. Moak + the man that stays with him spent the evening here last eve.
Mar 12
Saturday and cloudy all day. I guess Bede will drive me into Chico to nite to get groceries and I may go over to see the doctor + have my leg dressed. The spotted sow slashed me on the shin 2 weeks ago to morrow. I was bringing in some wood and she was standing by the gate + spot was barking at her. I hit on the back and she turned bit me a slash about 2 1/2 in I think. I came in the house where Clede + Hazel were and they Bandaged it or helped me and Clede went out and called Tracy; he + Russ were hunting. After she'd called a while he heard and hurried in and took me to Chico to the hospital. We tried the clinic first but being Sunday it was closed. We went over to the hospital where Dr. Enloe dressed it. I went in Thurs, Mon, Tues + Wed then Friday then again last Monday the last time I was in. I can walk now with out much limp + the soreness is almost gone. My what a time we had Tracy, Hazel, Andrew + Edna had come Sat. the 27. Ed stayed at mother's most of the time. Andrew is so awfully sweet I've never seen a baby sweeter except may be my own. He was saying "ki" for kitty. He is so big we weighed him an nearly as we could judge in the scales he weighed 24 lbs. Vonna coos + smiles so sweet laughed out loud the day my was hurt, sometimes she puckers her mouth and cries so pitiful we call her "pit-mouth" also "whistie britchie". I stayed all day yesterday at mother's also nite, nite before last. Mrs. Hendricks died a few days ago. I guess Bede + Clede will go up to mother's to morrow eve to stay 2 or 3 weeks. Mother's house looks so cute + comfy. Mother seems well. Tracy, Hazel + Andy + Edna left Wed the 9th about noon I think.
Mar 14
this is Monday cloudy all day as was yesterday. Bede + Clede + baby moved up to mother's last eve. Russ went too. He had been home for 2 days. He started back to school last Wed. after having been out almost 4 weeks. Sat. nite Ted went to a dance at Concow and didn't get home till last nite. I heard that he had been drinking and using bad language. My leg doesn't hurt much to day. I went to the Dr. Sat. nite and he dressed it all day yesterday it didn't feel very good. The spotted sow is terribly lame where Tracy hit her with a rock.
Mar 23
Wed. and a rather pretty day, cloudy most of the time but warm. Marie went into Chico night before last and will spend this week in the witness work. This is Thanksgiving week; I'm going to try to go in to morrow eve + come out Saturday if possible. We partook of memorial over to Marie's all 3 of us Mother, Marie + I.
I had gotten grape juice + unsalted crackers by Ted when he went in. I then stayed all night at mother's and came home with Bede as he went to work next morning. Ted left Sun. nite with Lyman and didn't get home till the next nite didn't work Monday. Fred didn't work Sat., he and Moak killed the hog and I just finished salting it down yesterday not an awful lot of lard in her. Yesterday, Joe, Anna +Trapp were here about 3 hrs. Anna said she was glad to get back to Yankee Hill after her visit in L.A. She had a lame knee. My leg is almost well I dressed it last nite the 2nd time I've dressed it, the 1st time was last Sun eve before I went to the memorial. The doctor had dressed it a little over a week before that. He dressed it al to geather 7 times. Tracy paid him the first time he dressed it at the hospital ($2.50) Bede + Clede went into town nite before last and last nite Bede went in and got mother's chiffonier. The mine prospects don't look so good. Sat. eve shot old Queen said she was down and couldn't get up. We get 9 or 10 eggs a day now. Fred set some turkey eggs last nite. Vonna is strong, raises up.
Mar 29
Tuesday and has been a very pretty day. I'm alone these days and enjoy it. I had my Tower that I read. The last news I read the Lindberg; hadn't got their baby back that was kidnapped Mar. 1. Dave Lindsy came over this eve to see Ted, borrowed $2.00 of him, is going to L.A. in the morning with his father. I went to Chico Sat. night with Bede, Clede, Vonna + Russell. I went back with Fred after staying in town all day. We had to change tires before we left town + got home after 11. I had dinner that day with Sr. Compton, Br. Brotthes was there, I didn't get out in the witness work. Marie was out 4 1/2 days. Sr. Compton gave me several Bulletins + other papers to read. She sent for the year book for me. Sat. we sent $50.00 to Don Crain making $100.00 we've sent so far, we sent the others last month. I think about the 20th but I'm not sure. My leg doesn't feel a bit sore now + of course I don't limp. I still have a bandage on it. The last time I dressed it was last week. Sat. I got 2 new prs. of shoes $1.49 + $1.29 just house slippers + 1 strap pumps 3 or 4 days ago. Gus Simmons + his uncle started working at the mine. Ted sent for some shirts + I some dresses to Fashion Frocks. I sent a letter to Anna to day.
Apr. 5
Tuesday and a pretty day so far yesterday + day before were a little rainey and last nite it was quite cold; frosted; wonder if it has hurt fruit. Ted took Russ + me into Chico to the show last nite, pretty good. Bede + Ted quit or rather were canned, or considered it so, so they could get their money, last Friday morning went up early Sat. morn + cashed their checks out. Al Barton + Gus Struebel who quit too had trouble getting theirs. Bonelli who left Fri. after noon hasn't returned yet. Nite before last Mother, Bede + Clede were over and spent the evening. Little "Whistie"(Vona) is so bright just holds her head up fine and looks all around is all eyes. That rash is about gone now and she is getting prettier all the time. She weighed 11 lbs. 6 oz. at 2 1/2 mos or a few days over. Clede is her cod liver oil + orange juice. Her aunt sent her a little ring. My leg is O.K. I still have a little bandage on it. Russ stayed all nite last nite went back with Ted this A.M. when he went to take the machine back to Bede, he's going to take Clede in to the dentist to day. We thru the last of the hog away, spoilt I guess I didn't get enough salt on it. I want to get out in the pioneer work. Russell looks well weighs 75 lbs. and is 4 ft 5 3/4 in. tall. He wants to be huskey and tall. Ted wore his new suit last nite and sure looked good. He stayed all nite nite before last up in the bend with Lyman + the boys.
Apr 8
Friday eve and this has been a very pretty day.Fred has just come home from the mine and is running the machine to build the battery up. I was alone all day to day. Ted went down to Intake yesterday morning and didn't come home last nite, I enjoy being alone. I made me a dress to day a red flowered smock; it cost 30 cents 10 cents per yd. I'm reading Vindication over again, I'm now on page 91. Ihope i can get out in the Witness work. Maybe they will bring Russell up to nite.
Apr. 14
Thursday and a very pretty day, it rained yesterday + the nite before. Well the men had quite a conflab with Erricson at the mine this A.M. I guess "Slim" Erricson + Wright were the most wrought up. Erricson has promised to pay the men the 20th. Bonelli came home day before yesterday and Jim Reno was up also. Erricson says he is to pay Reno so much per month, he says Reno is broke I don't know how true it all is. Ted went down to the river this morning I guess. Moak turned the cow in for us to milk yesterday but she got out. The wrong cow, he didn't turn her in. Ted, Lyman + Bill J killed 2 of the Crain goats 2 or 3 days ago, or rather, nites ago. Russ is home with that "Italian Itch" on his neck; came home nite before last, I'm putting Capilaris on it but it seems to be spreading. I may have to get something from the drug store. Day before yesterday I rec'd the little jacket + booties that Bess sent for Clede's baby, I'm making a quilt for her baby. I went to town with Bede last Saturday Russ went with us. I washed my hair to day. I'm reading "Vindication".
Apr 27
Wednesday, my Girlie's birthday, Wish I could see her. The past few days have been cloudy + cold + rainy. Ted and the men made their 2nd trip to Sacramento to go before the labor commission to see about getting their wages got no satisfaction either guess they'll not get their money under a month at least, Fred has $246.00 and the other men about the same. Erricson, Brooks + Bonelli were there of course. Dan Simmons went with Erricson. They all went down last Thursday too. Tues. the 19th was the last day that Fred worked at the mine. The Simmons have kept on working ; a 3rd one is there now, I believe. Ted stayed home all nite last nite or rather nite before last the first he'd been home except one other nite for over a week.. He'd been up in the mts. to an Indian Pow-wow, has gone again to day , I guess to Lyman. Bede and Clede went back down to mother's day before yesterday. I guess they'll be back up here to day. Bede is planning on going down into the valley in a few days to see about getting on the harvest. He + Fred panned + "racked" down on Fred's place 2 or 3 days. A few days ago Marie, Bede + Clede had a little confab seems to be the order of the day in this family. I'm sorry and I want to keep from anything that mite cause a bitterness. "Keep thy heart with all dilligence, for out of it are the issues of life". Little Vona is getting so fat and sweet, gets pittiful mouth some times! Doesn't want to lie down but raises her self up prety good. Russell's "Impetigo" is much better may be he can go to school next week. I'm using "Ammoniated Mercury"
May 2
Monday night about 9: P.M. Every body is in bed but Fred + I. He had gotten ready for bed but went out to see about some little turks that he was afraid would get wet. This has been the wettest coldest spring. We have 53 little turks now. The man was coming to get the hogs to morrow but I'm afraid it will be too rainy. We're out of groceries and we sure need the money for the hogs. Fred + the others went to Oroville + saw Duncan, Lawyer, I guess they'll go to Sacramento Thursday. Bede + Ted left Friday morning for the valley to see if they could get lined up for the harvest. Little Vonna is growing and getting so fat. Moak came over this morning + we tried out his gold needles. They pulled down and he marked the spot. Clede put some rocksthere. Russell's neck is not quite well yet and he has 2 or 3 other places on his chin + side of his face + 2 places on his leg above the knee. I'm reading Vindication.
May 10
Tuesday and a very beautiful warm day it has been. The last 2 or 3 days have been quite warm. I guess Spring has come to stay after such a long seige of wet cold weather. All the pears and lots of the apples on the place are killed. Bede, Ted, Clede + baby, Russ and I all went to town yesterday. I got Russ a pr. of tennis shoes and 2 pr. of sox. Rena sent him a green shirt she had made a few days ago. Clede wore her black + white print dress that I made. Little Vona is so sweet and cute. She puckers her mouth so sweet some times, we call her pil-mouth. Moak went to town yesterday, hasn't returned yet. Fred did his chores this morning. My bowels are quite in active.

They'll have some of it assayed. Fred drew $101.00 of his money when they all went to Sacramento last. He sent Don Crain $50.00. Russell is at Mother's. Had quite a soretoe a few days ago. I'm planning to get out in the witness work this coming Tuesday + maybe Monday. Br. S. Tontjam(?) will be in Chico + Live Oak. The baby is so sweet. She is fat and quite active + bright. She turns over on her back and manages to get off the quilt when she is put on the floor. I don't feel any too well. I think I'm a little too stout. My bowels aren't active enough.
June 9
Thursday, and a beautiful day it has been. Clede did a big washing to day. Baby Vona was quite cross. We set her in a box and she gets ahold on the sides and pulls up on her feet and we're afraid she'll fall out on her head. She crawls all around the floor on her little tummy sometimes up on her knees a little bitshe can sure go pushes with her little toes so cute. She has such blue eyes + long black lashes her hair is comingin brown it is getting pretty long all over her head. Verna + Bill + Mrs. + Mr. Fouch were here came Sat. morning (28th of May) and went home Monday 30th. It rained almost the whole time they were here which disgusted them of course. Phelps didn't get any. Russell passed with high grades ( A's + B's) to the 7th grade. Little Vona is so sweet and bright, she crawls all over on her little tummy and sits alone and pulls up on her little feet we don't dare to leave her sitting in her little box she gets a hold of the sides and stands up she's afraid of strangers and gets "pit-mouth" when they talk to her. I bobbed Vona's hair 3 or 4 days ago. Bill + Verna are here; came about 11 o'clock. It is now 1:30 I have a sore tooth. I wish they were all out. I have no front teeth had them all out some time ago.
Oct 9
Sunday and a very nice day. The nights are rather cold. Bede + Clede have gone to take Russ up to Mother's as usual he spent yesterday and to day at home he spends Saturdays and Sundays home. He likes his school and his teacher. Bede + Clede were over to Fred's place tearing some of the old house down. Bede is saying now that he's going to build one room about 16 x 14. They left Vona with me. She is sweet walks around by just putting one hand on things and stands alone some times. Bill + Verna were here 2 wks., left a week ago yesterday. Marie was in Chico all last week in the 9 day witness week. Bob + Mother met her last nite. Bede, Clede, Vona + I were in Chico after groceries + Bede paid $10.00 on his Montgomery Ward acct. He still owes $10.00. Grace wants me to come down + get my teeth there says she'll see that I get them. I went over to Wright's Thurs. and placed 10 booklets.
Oct 16
Sunday and a very pretty day it has been. Bede, Clede, Vona and Russell have gone up to Mother's. Russ went of course to stay for school. I stayed with mother 2 nites and a day last week. I have a very sore finger I think I must have gotten it a little infected. It's the fore finger on my rite hand. Little Vona takes hold of any one's hand and walks all around. She took 2 steps alone to day 2 or 3 times. She says or tries to say 3 or 4 words. Says "Dey" for "there". We're almost out of every thing to eat. Bede is still working. Ted and Lyman started in the rice last Thurs. morning. Al Barton started at the mine a day or two ago. Just think the year is almost thru.
Oct 30
Sunday and Bede + Clede + Baby have driven up to Mother's taking Russ home to Mother's so he can go to school. Bede, Clede, + Baby stayed all nite at Mother's last night, ate dinner at Marie's. We went to the Halloween doings at the school house Friday nite. The children did quite well. There was a dance afterwards. Ted + Lyman were there but I don't think they were drinking much. I've been telling Lyman quite a lot about the Truth and he seems quite interested. We rec'd word from Rena that their house had burned the 18th. Little Vona took 16 steps alone yesterday at one time 15 steps another time 14 once and 12 once. She had taken 2 steps several times as long as 2 weeks ago. She is fat and sweet likes tomatoes + apples. Bede + Clede + Baby were over to Fred's place to day. Bede thinks he may tear down that old house + build 2 rooms. My finger is about well it had an abcess I think. We're out of grub. Reno owes Bede about $144.00 I think. Ted worked there 2 days last week.
Nov. 3
Thursday and a very pretty day it is too. We had our first rain nite before last quite a little rain. I've been ironing to day of course washed the dishes and swept as usual, just finished mopping the Kitchen + bath room. I mop nearly every day. I do all the work except putting up lunches. I take care of the baby quite a bit too. She's awfully cross to day. For the first time in her life she has been sick. She commenced Sunday eve and for several days has had quite a fever I thot at first she had eaten some thing but I think now that she must have a touch of the flu or some thing that is going around that they call the "flu". Marie had it last week. Yesterday eve Clede sent some pot holders up to Marie for her birthday present. Reno went to S.F and hasn't returned yet. Bede is getting disgusted. Reno owes him about $164.00 I think and Bede thinks he'll pay him part of it when he returns from the city. He owes Bob $20.00 more than he does Bede he paid Bede $20.00. Ted has worked 6 days to day. Lyman has gone up in the mts. where he and Ted were to get some things that they left there. My book Preservation hasn't come yet. I'm anxiously awaiting it. Bede commenced getting milk of Lena Hendrix Monday nite (31st) has gotten 3 qts so far.
Nov 20
Sunday and another nice day no rain since Nov 2nd. The electricity is past and Roosevelt was elected. Our Preservation books haven't come yet. I went to S.F. last Sunday and met with other witnesses to confer and consider how best to conduct the coming witness campaign. Br. Yuke is general service director for this part of the state. Bede took me as far as Marysville then paid my round trip to Sacramento ($1.70) Then I went out to Br. Butler's, he stays at Sr. Nichols, + then went in a Chev sedan the next morn with Br. Butler and 3 others. Marie + I are to zone Chico + Oroville as soon as possible. Bede + Ted, Bob + Al Barton were laid off at the mine last Saturday. He hasn't paid them yet. They're to get paid tomorrow. Marie + I went to Paradise Thurs. + I went to Rita Barton's + Teena Leslie day before yesterday + placed (?)1 + 6 booklets with Teena + 6 booklets with Rita. Bede and I took Russ home that morning as he seemed rather sick + I was afraid he had the whooping cough. The baby is fat and sassy. She doesn't walk much yet. She has walked a cross the room. I think she had the measles.
Nov 25
Friday and a beautiful morn. We thot yesterday it would rain it was cloudy. As it was "Thanksgiving" we had turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed spuds, canned peaches, veg, salad (the last 2 Marie brot) pumpkin + mince pies, mother brot the mince pies. Mother, Bob, Marie were here also Mr. May + Mr. Snider. The dinner was fine. Mr. May had brot along a bottle of "good cheer" + had imbibed a little freely. When they left last nite for this river house Ted went with them. Ted has been sick for the past 2 or 3 days with the "flu" which is an epidemic all over now. Russ is home with it. Wednesday, day before yesterday Bede, Bob + Marie + I zoned part of Chico. We'll finish next week also Oroville I guess. We got 3 maps of Chico 25 cents apiece, I got one, Bede one, Marie one. I must write some letters to day. Clede got a permanent Tuesday. Bede, Bob, Ted (?) etc. moving Tracy morning.
Dec 7
Wed. and has been a very pretty day a little cold. I have been sick with the flu, was in bed all day a week ago last Sunday and have felt punk and coughed awfully ever since. I stayed all nite with mother last nite and I guess Bede will take Marie + me to Fresno to morrow to hear Br. Tontijam instruct in the field service. I feel much better to nite. Bede, Clede + Vona have gone over to Barton's to nite. We've rec'd "Preservation" and I have finished Esther. Bede, Ted, + Marie zoned Oroville yesterday. Bede, Marie + I finished zoning Chico a few days ago. Smith was here to day got turkey. Fred got $27.11 for his 18 turkeys he shipped to S.F.
Dec 18
Sunday and not so cold this A.M. I'm about over my cough and feel pretty well again. Bede, Marie + I went down to Fresno went a week ago last Thurs. and home a week ago to day. Br. Tontijam was there 4 days and we heard him give some fine talks. He was organizing for the new campaign work. It was literally cold in Fresno a real cold snap all over the state; snowed in Frisco, L.A. and pretty much all over. Bede, Marie + I went went with several other machine loads and witnessed in Madena. I placed a Kingdom booklet + Marie traded for a book + 2 or 3 booklets. Bede place 2 booklets I think. It was quite cold in the rooming house. We hovered over the radiators out in the hall. Our room was 75 cents, Bede, 50 cents. At a cafe under where we roomed we got cheap rooms. There is a optical drive New Year's day and of course we want togo. Fred shipped 17 turkeys last Thurs to the Half moon Co in S.F I don't suppose he'll get much for them. He's shipped 18 before Thanksgiving + got $27.11 for them, 14 + 12 cents a lb. Wish I could get these teeth out. Vona walks all over now of course. She says 9 words. Fred, Bede, Russ + I went to Oroville yesterday and finished zoning Oroville got Russ's hair cut 25 cents. I have read part of "Preservation" of course it's good. we're all out of money. Lyman has been staying here but the last 2 nites stayed home. They killed several deer full of worms. We saw the classy new Chev cars yesterday.
Dec 31-32
This is the last day of the year and is now about 10:25 P.M Fred, Russ + I are here alone. Bede, Clede, Ted + Ivona have gone to mother's and later to Ed Black's to see the twin girls born the 21st. Clede made 2 little dresses + took over to them. Vona is still fat + sweet runs every where and is into every thing. She is a nice looking baby. She says several words. When she gets sleepy atnite she is bound Clede must go to bed with her. A few days ago Von sent her some little morning shoes. Bede has been having tooth ache quite a lot. Fred got returns from his 2nd bunch of turkeys a few days ago $22.63 the first one brot $27.11. We've been reading quite a lot about "Tenochracy"(?). To morrow is another big drive day and on account of no money Marie nor I can't go. I do hope we can go to all of them from now on. We must get out as much as possible. Trcy, Von + Grace are getting out. They just came home and brot the 3rd check $31.65 12 cents for most of them. Bob is still working at the mine was laid off for a week to nite. I have quite a sore leg. I fell off mother's front steps a week ago last Wed. and hit my shin skinned + bruised it. It's still sore. Mother fell too + hurt her side: the steps were coated with ice it had rained + frozen.

Jan. 1
Sunday and a very pretty day. We all sat up after Bede, Clede, Ted + Vona came home and watched the old year out. Ted fired off his revolver several times at mid nite. I made some taffy and Russ + I had pulled it. Russ and I had a good time all evening playing games. Fred slept on the cot for about 2 hrs, Fred + Bede have gone over to Fred's place to finish cleaning the lumber of the old house that Bede had torn down. Ted + Lymam are off some place prospecting I guess. I think I'll go with Russ when he goes back to mother's to nite and stay all day to morrow. He starts back to school to morrow morning after a weeks vacation. To day the big drive is on and I do wish I could go.
Jan 13
Friday eve and this has been a nice day. I've been alone all day to day. Bede, Clede + Vona are up to mother's + Marie's. Bede is working on Bob's car. He worked on it a week or two ago and they gave him $12.00 for it altho he didn't feel like taking it. Marie insisted. They all went to town yesterday. We want to go to Oakland 2 days next Sat + Sun (21 + 22) to hear Br. Rutherford. I rec'd 2 letters from Von saying she and Tracy were to be baptised I think last Sunday. They are so interested in Jehovah's work and I'm glad. I get blue some times wish I could get out more. Little Vona is terrible sweet. Bob got paid in full I think, about $132.00. I wish I could get my teeth out and new ones in.
Jan 19
Thurs. and the ground is covered with snow. We were all to go to Oakland to morrow in Bob's car to hear Br. Rutherford, but the snow is so deep that Bob + Marie don't think it safe to take their car afraid it might be storming in S.F. and Oakland. Clede and the baby are up to mother's to nite. Bede + Ted managed to get the machine up there and back. I am to go in the morning. Clede has her clothes and the baby's all ready and I know she'll be terribly disappointed but I hardly think we'll go, we could take Bede's machine and he, Clede, Baby + I go but I don't think we will. It snowed all day yesterday and I think it was about 16 inches deep. Bede, Ted + Clede snow-balled and made a snow man. I stayed all nite nite before last with mother, was going to stay till evening but Bede came after me in the morning. It was a good thing he did too as the snow was so deep Ted had to get out and push up some of the hills. I had all my upper teeth pulled last Sat. 14th. My gums are still sore but they are getting along fine I think. I'll have my lower 5 out about next week I guess. Morris pulled them: 8 or 9 of them. Russ didn't go to school yesterday I don't know whether he did to day or not. Fred has not rec'd his turkey check for the last turkeys he shipped 3 wks. ago to day. Mrs. Lunt is in the P.O. alone.
Feb 20
Monday and has been a fairly nice day. The snow is all melted around the house but the flat is covered with several inches yet. We didn't get to go to Oakland to hear Bro. Rutherford and haven't got to go on any drives either but I'm planning to go to L.A. about Mon 10 I think maybe Bede, Clede + Baby will go too. I'm sewing every day, I made 2 little dresses for Vona + a pr. of panties, and a dress for Clede last week I had my upper teeth 8 or 9 of them, pulled by Dr. Morris of Choco Jan. 14th and my lower 5, Feb. 4th. My gums healed quickly. Grace sent me $20 and then $50.00 when I was snow bound down at mother's just one day lacking 2 weeks. Mother + I had a good visit and I read "Deliverance" aloud. I went to mother's Friday Jan 20 and it snowed so much that the roads were impassable and I couldn't get home. I guess Tracy went on the special drive to Brawley yesterday. Marie and I would have liked to go to Salinas on the special campaign, but couldn't go. Little Vona is so sweet, doesn't talk much more if any, Thurs. she did. Fred has had a bad cough for about 2 1/2 months. Bede had a boil on his leg last week and 2 on his ankles, Clede had one on her face.
Mar 22
Here I am at Tracy's in Lynwood- 3129 Flower St We started from home in Big Bend a week ago last Sunday morning or on Sunday Mar 12th. It was raining when we left and rained until after we passed Modesto, hadn't rained down here. We first went to Edna's in Walnut Park- 2644 Cudahy St. they weren't expecting us for 2 or 3 days. Everything was so upset on account of the big earth quake that had happened Friday eve the 10th. Terribly destructive especially in Long Beach + Compton. Wrecked Huntington Park, Walnut Park + Lynwood. They're busy rebuilding all over. I've gone to several meetings + studies. I want to get out as soon as possible. I went to Burbank and ordered my teeth made last week, went back day before yesterday and had them fit and am to go to morrow when I guess I'll get them. They'll cost me $35.00. I do hope I can wear them and that they'll be O.K They're all getting ready for the big drive "Witness Thanksgiving period from Apr. 8 - 16 I got me a new book case $1.25 at the hall last nite. Tracy + Von are busy + very interested in the work. I want to be faithful + humbly obedient to my Heavenly Father. Little Andrew is sweet and bright just says every thing and plain too. Talks plainer than Bobby. Cart, Mary, Gret + Bobbie were over to Ed's last week. Bbbie is a cute little tot isn't very well disciplined but they've put himup to a lot and he'll likely get over that. Andrew is a mite the taller and I should judge quite a lot the heavier. Little Vona is awfully sweet and is so fat, she doesn't say many words. Nearly every day we feel little earthquake shocks. How I miss my little Russell Pal! I rec'd a letter from mother, Marie + Russ last week nut none yet from Fred or Ted. Well the banks have opened for awhile and America is under a dictator. The next few weeks may bring great things.

The people that bring meat up here took our stray dog, a shepherd, he was one they'd lost over a month before. We liked the dog a lot + hated to see him go and he didn't want to go. Mother has 2 little kittens. My I'm tanned! The "World Recovery " campaign starts to morrow.
Sept 19 - '34
This is Wed. and quite a hot day. I'm at Mother's - she and Marie are in Oroville - where they went last Sunday. Mother had a badly swelled + inflamed eye and went to the Dr. - he said she had an absess on the upper lid. He told her to get Boric acid crystals and put some in water then put it on the eye as a hot compress 4 or 5 times a day - 20 min. at a time, also gave her a perscription to get filled of something to drop in her eye. It started getting sore the day we left Grace's (Sept. 8th) Marie has rented an apartment of Baker's in Oroville at 12.50 per month. Mother paid $5.00 on the rent. Marie has gone in to witness with "Pros. + Fam." also to be there on the big drive Sept 30 to Oct 9. Russ goes to Hi - likes it fine so far; missed the first week on account of being in L.A. I miss every body in L.A. especially my darling little girl - Vona. Bed's baby little Jimmy was growing when I left. Well I have mother's house all cleaned up and will go in with Bob to morrow morning may stay to witness.
Oct 31
Wed. after noon. It has rained nearly all day. I am at Mother's. Russ is at school of course, likes it fine - wants to go to the Halloween program out here at the Concow school to nite. Fred stayed all nite here night before last, looks thin and bad - I don't believe he coughs so badly. Albert Busch was burried the 22nd of this month. Carter + Clark were here about 10 day, came Sep 21 + left Sep 30th. Ima died about Sept 12th I think. Zena Clark Mullins died this A.M early.
Nov. 9
Friday and a beautiful morning, as was yesterday. Marie + I walked over to Anna's yesterday and I sewed on Marie's flowered dress. We went to Zena's funeral Nov. 2, she was buried in Clark's private burial ground. I want so much to go to L.A. for the drive from 24th to Dec. 2nd; Russ likes his school hasn't missed a day since he started. Some of the men at the Surcease are laid off awhile waiting for the new compressor. The new Hi-way was open Nov. 1st. We're all well. Haven't seen Fred for almost 2 weeks; Marie had Lena Hendric's machine brot over last nite.
Nov 17

One day it rained(Friday) but was nice the rest of the time. Marie got 22 hrs. + placed 117 - I got in 15 1/2 hrs. - 54. I got a new pr. low heeled shoes and rubbed 2 blisters on one of me feet. I want to go to L.A. in about 2 weeks or before. Russ still likes Hi is very interested in sports - especially foot ball. Br. Rutherford is to speakat the Shrine Aud. Jan. 13th. Fred was here last week, cut about a tier of wood for Mother. I'm wondering how the St. car strike is in L.A. I rec'd a letter from Della in Riverside a few days ago.

Tuesday and a very pretty day it has been. I am at Grace's in L.A. I stayed all nite at Bede's last nite + till this eve. Bede + I worked out in Hermosa Beach yesterday with the 3 books and the petition. I washed at Bede's to day. Vona is so sweet + pretty - talks perfectly plain. The baby is so pretty. He is fat, but not so very large. Has no teeth. Little Roger, who was sick almost a month ago is much better. Andrew is growing. Bede isn't working. I came here a week ago to morrow. Bob + Marie got their De Soto a week ago on Dec. 22nd. We're looking forward to the convention - 11th, 12th + 13th.
Apr. 2nd
Ed + I have just finished cleaning the house. Ed's stomach bothers her. I mailed a letter to Ted + Della yesterday also their Watch Tower. Bede had a transcription meeting last nite substituted, is working for the SERA to day, worked last week also. A week ago last Sun. we heard the new sound car that B.R gave the L.A. class, grand. I guess Bede, Ed, + Grace will go to Bakersfield next Sunday. I hope I can go to the convention. Tracy is trying to plan to take a bus. He + Hazel + kids spent Sun. evening + afternoon at Cart's + Mary's, Jimmie has a tooth, noticed it first just 2 or 3 days ago. He began crawling Mar. 1st, climbs up everything + walks around, sat alone good Jan. 24th is awfully sweet; weighed 19 lbs. here on Grace's scales last Sat. Vona weighs 35 1/2. I weigh 151 - Grace 130 - Ed 124 1/2 - Clede 95 - Bede 175 - Tracy 210 - Hazel 111 - Andrew 40 - Rodie 28 - Cart 104 1/2 - Chet 210 1/2 - that's all that weighed. Mary is looking awfully big + quite fat. Conditions in Europe are tense - looks like war. The Gideone Picture is fine. I'm home sick to see my boy Russ. Rodie says oodles of words, anything + everything but not long sentences, just 2 or 3 words sentences, not very plain. Weather has been cloudy + cold.
Apr - 27
Sat - cloudy, as usual - we've had very little sunshine this year - some think the same sonditions that are causing the dust storms thru the middle west, are causing the unusual, cloudy, muggy weather. At the meeting last nite - convention was discussed mostly. I had hoped to be able to go but the bus is definitely out - Tracy may take his car and go. I spent the day at Tracy's yesterday. Kids are fine. Hazel is sick morning, doesn't show much. Rodie says words but practically no sentences yet, is still thin, but I believe looks better than he did. He weighs over 28 lbs. Andrew 42 - Bobbie 36 lbs. Mary was over 2 or 3 days ago - weighs 183 lbs. Ed - Grace + I spent the evening 2 or 3 days ago (Wed - 24) Clede + babies are well. Clede is awfully thin - fell a day or two ago and struck her head + cut it on the corner of the cublard - has a bruised heel. Little Jimmie is so sweet walks around chairs holding on by one hand. Day before yesterday I went out with Bede up in the Palos Verde Hills while he witnessed I kept the 2 kids, Vonie + Jimmie they were so good. We were out about 4 hrs. and little Jimmie had nothing to eat all that time and was so good natured + sweet + smart. Bede is still working for the SERA - gets $16.00 a week. Marie will be down day after tomorrow - I think Gret may marry Frank from what she said. Forney + Von were O.K. when I last heard, their accident turned out better than I expected. I wish I could run up to Y.H.
May - 18

Bede + Clede were over to dinner to nite and little Jimmie has started walking - took 2 + 3 steps several times, 5 steps once 8 steps another time and 11 steps. He has 3 teeth and another about thru. He stood alone good the day he was 9 mos old : sat alone good Jan. 24th Mary's baby boy born May 4 is doing fine - he weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz - Mary weighed 186 lbs. just before he was born.
